The  NICCE framework for cybersecurity gives you work role categories common for cybersecurity. It groups work fields that someone can be accountable for. This can give you a path to what work each field plays a part in and the skills needed. It is a great tool to help start your career search. Rather, you are looking for design and development, oversight and governance, etc you can find the building blocks needed to start.

Looking over the work role categories from the niccs.cisa.gov website, I see a few paths that interest me. I am most interested in design and development. I think it will be a role that could be challenging and provide me with some tasks that I would have to troubleshoot. Some work roles in that field that interest me are in cybersecurity, architecture, and operational technology cybersecurity engineering.  The next field i see as a path would be investigations. Roles like digital evidence analysis and cybercrime investigation. These interest me because of the task of putting the puzzle pieces together of cybercrime in order to solve the case. The last top role would be protection and defense. Roles in digital forensics and incident response, investigating why things happened. My least favorite would be implementation and operation. I think the roles would not be as rewarding for me. These roles interest me the most, with multiple avenues to grow. Even choosing one of these fields doesn’t limit you to just one field.
